Metal distribution, bioavailability and isotope variations in polluted soils from Lower Swansea Valley, UK

چکیده

Soils in the Lower Swansea Valley, (United Kingdom) contain elevated level of metals, enough to cause direct or indirect effects on human health. This study assesses severity soil pollution and bioavailability Cu other metals (Ni, Zn, Co, Pb Cr) soils with various distances from a Ni refinery. We compare concentrations operationally defined fractions (bioavailable, bound Fe/Mn oxide incorporated organic matter) Pb, usually occurring ores used metallurgic processes report their geoaccumulation indices (PI Igeo). Further, we use stable isotope ratios (δ65Cu) trace fate mobility soils. Our data suggest point source contamination for some heavy including (Igeo = 1.9), Zn 0.28) 3.6) near However, Co 0.15) 3.3) contaminations are likely be linked different sources. No Cr levels (Igeo= -0.07) occur any studied All predominantly associated matter (>50%) which reduces bioavailibility thus risk ecological The show that is enriched 65Cu, while lighter isotopes (63Cu) remain dissolved bioavailable fraction (Δ65Cuorganic-bioavailable +0.12 ± 0.13‰). suggests preferential complexation 65Cu after dissolution deposited soil. Thus, can effectively indicate pathways metal migration polluted

Heavy metals and their bioavailability from soils in the long-term polluted Central Spiš region of SR

The heavy metal contents and their bioavailability were monitored in soils of Central Spiš region of SR. This area belongs to long term contaminated and hygienically loaded areas. Soil contamination by heavy metals is caused especially by ore mining, processing and treatment. Soil samples from the Central Spiš contained higher proportions of mobile forms which corresponded to the following sequ...

Bioavailability in soils

In this chapter we review and discuss the commonly used phrase or concept "bioavailability". This concept is key to Risk Assessment as it assesses what proportion of a contaminant present at a contaminated site is available for uptake by organisms and is thus potentially able to cause harm. Whilst this is a relatively straightforward concept the reader will discover that in reality life is not ...

Phytoextraction of heavy metal polluted soils using Sedum plumbizincicola inoculated with metal mobilizing Phyllobacterium myrsinacearum RC6b.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of metal mobilizing plant-growth beneficial bacterium Phyllobacterium myrsinacearum RC6b on plant growth and Cd, Zn and Pb uptake by Sedum plumbizincicola under laboratory conditions. Among a collection of metal-resistant bacteria, P. myrsinacearum RC6b was specifically chosen as a most favorable metal mobilizer based on its capability of mob...

Exogenous isolation of mobilizing plasmids from polluted soils and sludges.

Exogenous plasmid isolation was used to assess the presence of mobilizing plasmids in several soils and activated sludges. Triparental matings were performed with Escherichia coli (a member of the gamma subgroup of the Proteobacteria) as the donor of an IncQ plasmid (pMOL155, containing the heavy metal resistance genes czc: Co, Zn, and Cd), Alcaligenes eutrophus (a member of the beta subgroup o...
